Napa Valley Unified School District announced today it is launching a formal process in American Canyon to solicit concerns and feedback regarding the proposed new middle school construction in American Canyon. The announcement comes after Superintendent Dr. Rosanna Mucetti met with focus groups comprised of American Canyon parents and educators on Monday evening. During the meeting, district administration shared current district budget figures, enrollment data and population projections. The community input meeting will be held on May 20th at 6:00 p.m. at the American Canyon High School library.

Based on a current analysis of critical enrollment and population data, the district has illuminated how building a second middle school in American Canyon would require the district to make significant budget cuts to pay for the operational costs of running a second middle school, especially in light of current enrollment trends in the region. “Without new students enrolling in our district to generate revenue, the cost of running an additional middle school would require budget cuts, and unfavorable program reductions district wide,” said Dr. Rosanna Mucetti.

A new proposed middle school in American Canyon was initially included in a NVUSD Facilities Master Plan and budgeted in Measure H bond dollars back in 2016. However, based on declining enrollment and decreasing population growth in American Canyon, district administration and the Board of Trustees are evaluating whether new construction at this time is a prudent financial decision. For now, the district team has proposed to pause the construction process and reconsider the appropriate plan. A community engagement process is underway, and will allow NVUSD to share and discuss the district’s current enrollment and revenue challenges, and propose alternatives to building a new school to address some of the concerns with the current American Canyon Middle School campus.

“The NVUSD Board of Trustees and the District have a fiduciary responsibility to protect our financial assets and make sound and responsible budgetary decisions based on data, including managing our voter-approved Measure H bond funding with long term planning in mind,” said Dr. Mucetti.

The community input meeting will be held on Monday, May 20 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the American Canyon High School library. Translation and childcare will be provided. After gathering input from the community, NVUSD will make a formal recommendation to the Board of Education.

“We look forward to hosting this important community meeting,” said Dr. Mucetti.
